Start of 2016-17 Hunting Season

September 12, 2016 by

Its been a busy summer at the Cross Oaks Ranch, but we are glad its officially hunting season! Dove season is already here and getting us, as well as most hunters, excited about deer season thats just a few weeks away. Dove season is also the first hunting at the ranch since the spring.

On opening weekend we had a great group of guys come down with a long time hunter of ours to give the dove a try. Cody Guillory, Bryan Boudreaux, and Chris Guidry of Louisiana all had a good afternoon hunt with quite a bit of action. Rains the days before seemed to mess the birds up a little, but fortunately for us they were still flying around. One was able to get a limit while the other two fell just a little short.

They brought their own meals etc. for the hunt and Cody was nice enough to cook the guides some awesome steaks! We had a great time that evening back at the lodge sharing stories with an old friend and two new ones. Thanks again to all of them for a fun hunt.

Deer Season will be here before we know it! We have alot of repeat hunters this year as well as some new ones. We look forward to welcoming the new faces out to the ranch and give them a great experience. We have also been very blessed to have some great hunters come back to see us multiple times, some will be hunting with us for the 9th straight year. Many others have been here 3-8 times! We are truely grateful for all of them to be part of our ranch family. We also lost a dear friend of ours this year, one of our favorite hunters, and one of the best men we have had the privilege of getting to know. Danny, we will all miss you very much.

We have been preparing for the Texas Whitetail Hunts and exotic hunts for some time now, getting fall surveys done, starting to scout, getting stands cleaned up, and getting our facilities ready to go. We look forward to another great season and all the memories that will come with it. Our first Trophy Texas Whitetail and exotic hunt gets underway soon for what will be a busy October. We will get you updates on how things are going as soon as we can!

We have also been busy around the ranch with several new projects/improvements. We now have really nice three man metal rifle blinds at every hunting location. We have also added several more of our custom metal bow blinds and have bow hunting stands at every location. Our front gates have been redone in rock with custom ranch logos on them. Our shooting range has a new covered shooting pad with a custom bench and concrete slab. The barn/gameroom has a rock skirt added to the bottom of it and is home to a new enclosed polaris to add to our ATV fleet. The lodge had its front patio improved and made a little nicer with a new floor, roof, and beams. Our firepit area has had its rock redone. We have also made numerous improvements to help our wildlife including modified fencing for easier and safer crossing for the deer and more locations for supplemental feeding. There are quite a few other things we have done, but to many to mention here! We look forward to our guests enjoying them all. We already have plans for more projects next year!

Earlier this summer our longtime hunter Cody Guillory (you might recognize him from the dove hunt above), who owns Codys Crawfish in Louisiana, came down to the ranch and catered a great crawdad boil for us and some local friends of the ranch. It was a great time and the best crawdads you will ever have! Thanks to Cody and his team!
